The temperature in 1998 spiked due to an El Nino event that year, so there is an ounce of truth to this claim. But the trend is real and unmistakable. This is just one of those half-truths that endlessly repeats itself thanks to people like Drudge.

UPDATE: For example, Exxon Mobil lobbyist and FOX News contributor Steve Milloy is very fond of making this (repeatedly debunked) claim.
